3 Days at the Farm

Boy, have we had a great stretch of weather! Now we need the rain.

So, we got the cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower transplanted, watered and somewhat mulched. They look really good already. We also planted lettuce, scallions, Asian greens, Fordhook Giant Chard. We are pushing it but we planted Provider and Maxibel green beans. To see all that we have in the ground and started you can check on our website; http://www.otterhookfarms.com/

I also had the time to plow about 5 more acres for cover cropping and ground for next year.

Down to the farm Sunday; planting, watering and mulching. We are planning on putting in the onions and some other root crops.

Beautiful Day at the Farm

Today was a great day to be at the farm, it was sunny but not hot and the best part is the bugs are not out yet! We planted the peas; Sugarsnap snap peas and Sugar Ann and Oregon Giant Snow Peas. They are all about 60 day varieties so they should be ready about mid-June, a little later then we wanted but you can't fight mother nature.

I also got the plow fixed up and plowed the pasture field, didn't take very long but it is good to start the process, next is disking in about a week or so. Then we start the transplanting of our cole crops ( broccoli, summer cabbage, cauliflower).

As promised some images of the garlic and some of the farm, not much to see know but in about a month the farm will be busy!

Whats in the ground?

A couple of weeks ago we planted 200' spinach. Last week we added 100' French Breakfast Radishes (which by the way go great with butter and sea salt), 100' mixed beets; Detroit Red, Golden and Chioggia. 100' of Early Wonder Tall Top Beets, 100' Tonda di Parrige Carrots, 200' Amsterdam Carrots, 200' Mizuna Mustard and 200' Green Wave Mustard. We have some self seeded open-pollinated lettuce named Devils Ears; this lettuce is awesome for salad, great on sandwiches or wraps. We also have garlic in the ground from the fall, it is growing very well. We will add some pictures tomorrow. Tomorrow we will be going down to the farm in the afternoon and planting peas; sugar snaps and snow peas. Its a little late but we will still have them for the June pickup. I'm going share a photo of the Devils Ears from last year, I can't wait for the first salad!

Check out these beauties! Broccoli, cabbage, tomatoes and eggplant. We even have a broccoli and kale hybrid; Purple Peacock. Our peppers are doing well and so are the rest of our eggplant.
